April 21, 2006

First losses. The electrical power went out sometime after 3am.I went up the chicks first thing this morning and there were 3 dead turkeys huddled in the corner as there was no heat source. The sweet little poults which were playing with my boot laces yesterday. One had got its leg caught between the floor and the wall and was stuck and the other two stayed with it and froze.

I am very lucky there were not any more casualties as it is cooler and snowing again. One little Barred Rock was cold, but I set him under the heat lamp and he started to perk up pretty quick. I will check on him in a few minutes.

I had brought the 3 turkey poults down to see if I could hear anything with my stethoscope as their corneal reflexes were borderline. It is farm life, but though you have to accept it, you do not have to be happy about it. I woke up numerous times all through the night to look for that red glow coming from the poultry house windows too. Tonight and for nights afterwards I will have to get up at midnight and 3-4 am.
