May 2, 2006

I woke up and went to the trout egg harvesting station to learn about how they do that. It was very very interesting. A beautiful day as well. After they were done harvesting, they suggested I walk down the creekline to the lake.

The 3 dogs, whom I did not know, accompanied me, which was very sweet of them. Walking though the swamp grasses and the cattails, down the somewhat of a path and crossing a few fencelines, we followed the creek where we would see large native Trout coming up to spawn.

Every now and again, a dog or myself would scare them and there would be a huge splash and sometimes I got sprayed.Almost at the end, about 10 feet from me, I scared up a Red Tailed Hawk, I think... it burst out of the cattails and disappeared. Nearly scared me to death as I could not see it coming.... or rather going until the last second.. only a great clamor.

Came home and ripped off my front door and doorknob and painted the door white since it was various shades of white, dirt and grey concrete from when they poured the front porch 5-10 years ago. I also got all the boots off the front porch which I tossed there when I was cleaning the mudroom and had to put all my cases of soaker hoses and potting soils bales in there. Finally finished the other raised rock bed for the landscaping in front of the cabin. It looks pretty sweet.

Tomorrow I am planting more bulbs, iris, Japanese iris (I am told) and Lavender in there. The guys have the greenhouse almost complete. Just a section of the back wall and then installing the metal wall and the stovepipe. Then me and the plants can move in. We had friends over for dinner and I gave her some yams, ginger, asparagus and lemon scented geranium to start at home. I gave her the gardening bug last year and she is going wild this year. She is envious of my greenhouse and I told her if she did not have one next year, she is welcome to use a corner of mine in 2007. She does have an awesome well light warm basement though and she has been growing things like crazy in there.. even accidentally starting some pumpkins 2 months ago.. and they are going quite well in the basement actually. I will have to show her how to hand pollinate them.
